2.14.2014 an auspicious date for a loaded day. I’m so looking forward to participating in some of the NYC events for One-Billion Rising and will be reporting back, so stay tuned later in the week;)
Last year I was lucky enough to attend the Women in the World Summit here in NYC. Wow, was my mind blow away by not only the stories of violence against women and girls all over the world, but those that occur right here in the US. I was overwhelmed by the courage of young women risking their lives to fight for women’s right to education. My hand first went to my head, elbow on armrest, then to mouth as I bear witness to the stories of sex trafficking and slavery, again, not just abroad, but right here in our neighborhoods.
The silver lining in each situation was that there is a passionate and dedicated group of people behind these acts of atrocity working to exploit and abolish them as we speak. I left the theater hopeful that I could be half as badass of an activist one day.
I was also awe-struck by the tenacity of the women entrepreneurs featured. Again, the guts to follow their passion and purpose emanated from the stage. I was optimistic to be soaking up some of their cojones by mere attendance.
I left that conference kicking my heels out on sidewalk, walking more upright, embracing my femininity and feeling damn proud to be a woman.
On this day one of five, in love week, let this be a day of service. We forget how nurturing it is to our own souls to serve. Simple gestures will suffice; let time and money be no excuse. A genuine smile, holding the door for a stranger, picking up someone’s slack, shoveling your neighbor’s sidewalk. You name it. For the next 24 hours, lend more of a hand than you usually do. It is these self-less acts that cultivate the self.
If it is love that you seek, you must start by giving, by being love. #tyomd (tweetable)
I leave you with this: In this day of service, check into your city’s V-Day activities and see how you might be able to play a part on Friday. This event will be happening all over the world, simultaneously. Women and men, together, rising for justice.
