I scribbled this Einstein quote on the 4 Train this afternoon as I was going back through my bookmarks on an old audiobook:
“A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”
And, appropriately so, when I got home I read this story while eating dinner.
I thought what a terrific reminder of the beautiful planet we share. Our day-to-day seemingly boils life down to our inner circle, our immediate family, our partner, me, mE, ME! And, in so doing, we forget the unending support we have of the planet, the universe… a little perspective.
I leave you with this: We’re all in it together, nature AND nurture.
